also, it’s more meaningful to be extra nice to your partner EVERYDAY, not just on special occasions like Valentine’s Day or something.

10 random things about Belgium

1. they have cheap and good waffles! waffles + chocolate + caramel (or sometimes sugar) costs only 2E! hey, it’s not that expensive ok.. take a look at gelare.. and this is like damn damn good. best one would be at the store just beisde Mannekin Pis.. they will instantly do the waffle for you so it’s warm and nice!

2. I don’t know why the peeing boy aka Mannekin Pis is a famous statue.. i mean, it’s not really that grand and nice, as compared to the Grand Place. oh wait, i actually think i know the story.. but in any case, i think it’s a little overrated

3. You have to try mussels, fries, chocolates and beer when you’re in Belgium! I don’t really like seafood but i’m surprised i actually liked the mussels!

4. Genevivre is is like the best alcohol i’ve tasted! the hard one is 40% and the one with cactus is 20%. oh and btw, jupiler isn’t really nice. no matter how many people offer it to you, i don’t really think you should take it. 

5. If you want a nice quiet place, go to Brugges. Beautiful scenery.. which reminds me.. zhijian still has some of my photos because my camera battery was dying and i asked him to help me take (cos he has a charger). should get it from him soon.

6. Ghents/Gent is absolutely not a university town, and has no bars/cafes (i think, because we walked 3km only to settle at macdonalds because everything else was closed/served junk food)

7. you would have no idea what language to speak in belgium! bruxelles/brussels is a french part.. but when i tried asking a guy in french where is hotel de ville, he stared blankly.. before realising it’s city hall (i thought it translates better to town hall?)

8. one town which is 10km apart from the next has a different “dialect”, hence point #7.

9. Carnival in Aalst is crazily fun!

10. Belgium transport is very clean and nice! the Intercity trains are so comfortable, they’re almost like TGV (except that they only cost like 5,50E instead of 55E!)

10 random things about Barcelona 

1. Gaudi is everywhere. Okay, maybe more like his works are everywhere! Park Guell, Parc de citudella, basa batillo, le pedrera.. just to name a few

2. souvenirs are very expensive! and they’re all like gaudi/picasso inspired. (was picasso even spanish? what’s he doing there?)

3. barcelona is very easy to walk on foot.

4. transport is cheap and good! unlike paris, you do not have to pay 8,40E to come from the airport to the paris central. it only costs 1,70E, as per the normal tickets! also, a ride costs 0,77E if you buy the T-10.. so that’s about singapore’s price.. except that you can change from metro to bus/tram.. so it’s probably cheaper than in singapore!

5. metro is damn damn damn clean! omg! very little seats though :( but they announce ALL their stations, and there’s a tv screen to tell you what’s the next station as well (proxima estacio) unlike in paris.. whereby it’s so easy to miss your stops!

6. it’s not that difficult to understand spanish/catalan when you know french.

7. barcelona people speak catalan.. and not spanish! now that’s a shock right? i thought people in spain spoke spanish!

8. shopping and food here is damn cheap! you can easily get all you can eat buffets for 7E, buy a tunic top for 1,99E! do take note, however.. the smaller you are (ie the shoe size/clothes size)..the cheaper it gets! so i’m thankful for being uk6 for clothes, and Eur36 for shoes! 

9. you can ask for directions in english and the people wouldn’t understand. then they ask “vous parlez francais?” (do you speak french).. and you excitedly shout “OUI OUI!” (yes yes!) and you understand what directions they’re giving you! omg. i never knew french was THAT useful. but that’s because when they were in school.. they had to learn french/german on top of spanish. and most people learnt french because it’s closer to spanish, hence easier to study.

10. everything’s so beautiful, even the shops!

11. GLBT culture is damn strong here in barcelona! we even saw two girls kissing on the plane (and no dear, they’re not hot in case you’re wondering). and GLBT stands for Gays Lesbians Bisexual Transexual

10 random things about paris

1. the most frequent word you hear is “pardon”, everywhere on the streets, in the metro, etcetc. they’re all in a huge hurry.

2. metro stations smell like pee. seriously! and for some places (like the tunnel at gare du nord when you take rer b) smells like poo.

3. graffiti is everywhere! even in the tunnels where the metros are!

4. transport is expensive! (unlike barcelona). a day pass costs 3,20E.. which is why i get a navigo carte instead.. costs 55,10E each month (but only 18E in rome, wth!)

5. food is expensive too! in areas like trocadero, you can pay 15E for a bowl of salad. 

6. the staff wouldn’t care about you if you didn’t know how to speak french. and yes, even for tourist areas/ metro stations.

7. there are wayyy too many Bs and As and Gs around..

8. it’s dirty. really. people here spit as much as in china.

9. grocery shopping is very cheap, however. so it’s always a good thing to eat at home!

10. administration here is very very very slow. you can wait like A MONTH to get your bank card (and it’s not free).. although in singapore, you can just get it immediately. and you have to wait 2 months to get your resident’s stay card.. basically.. never ever hurry them. there’s no point.

The host thought that i was mad, because I replied something, and then there was another reply which contradicted the earlier reply.

and the worst part was.. my password was saved on her laptop. i mean, you need to check the box in order to save the password, because gmail doesn’t do it automatically. she says she didn’t touch anything.. but..

when i wanted to borrow her laptop to use my gmail later at night… she went to gmail, typed in my password in front of me and asked “eh, you’ve changed your password?”

how does it feel, really.. if someone had memorized your password, typed it in front of you when you didn’t ask her to, and that you’re not even close to her?

it made me cry out of exasperation TWICE in barcelona. 

or maybe thrice, i think i cried another time in the shower. 

i mean, there’s nothing extremely personal in my gmail.. but surely you’ve heard of privacy?

and it’s not so bad if it’s like hanwei.. cos i trust him anyway. but for someone who’s not close to me.. i feel really pissed.

i tried to take it in my stride to forgive.. but i can’t do so completely. 

and like the other day, you just came into my room, took my book from the table without even asking, and went to do a search and all, and now you’re pretending that you did the most correct thing in the world? 

and you keep bringing up this “book” issue here and there, i almost feel like slapping you when i hear the word.

but i’m controlling. i keep telling myself it’s no big deal.. and i think i am too nice for my own good.

and it’s not the first time that you took something without asking too. like the other time when i came back home, you just went “oh, i took your coloured pens”. sure they’re not exorbitantly priced and i would lend you.. if i knew about it ok?

just stop taking my things and stop logging into my account without asking!

ok other than that, i had some great fun at barcelona. shopping is really good. i kinda regret not buying the motorcycle leather jacket which costs 6,99E.. but because it’s size 38 and too huge for me even though i’m putting on two layers.. and you know you need to look smart with a jacket like that!

i bought a pair of boots from bershka for 9,95E.. and a cotton tunic for 1,99E.. stuff which you’ll never find in singapore for that price! lol. i know the boots are going to be a bit AA back in singapore.. but hey, at least it’s like ankle boots and not those knee length ones ok! plus they really look nice with jeans la! so heck in, i shall look danm AA back in singapore. hahahahaha

i had a great couchsurfing host too! he’s only 19 but he feels rather mature for his age, and he’s always worried that we don’t have enough to eat or something. hahaha. 

and then i had to stay at the hostel, and i met such great people! from argentina, ireland, australia, england, mexico, france, thailand.. wow.. we chatted and played some pool, drank some sangria, ate some chips, drank some tequila shots (george was the staff so he had access to all the facilites/drinks.. and he kept on going like “oh you must be thirsty, have a drink” and the drink is tequila, which makes you even thirstier. well done)

but at least they were nice.. like when they smoke.. they were like “smoking is bad for health, we won’t offer you one”. so that’s really nice la.. like they don’t force you under peer pressure, not that i will ever take up smoking anyway. 

oh and i found river island!! shit, i want a dress but it’s like 54E!!! hl, can i tell you the code and you help me check what’s the price in singapore? and if it’s cheap, get a size 6 for me? cos it’s about the same price in uk.. i wanna see how much is it in singapore.. lol

so, it was a rather spontaneous trip. we decided on thursday to go to belgium on Saturday.

and we actually visited Aalst (Oilst), Brussels (Bruxelles), Ghent (Gent), Bruges (Brugges) and Dendermonde.

And Belgium is a place.. whereby you wonder what language to use. (hence the brackets). I tried asking this guy for “hotel de ville” and he stared at me and asked what’s that. so i translated it to town centre.. and he thought for quite a while.. before asking me “are you referring to city hall?”

sheesh. it’s very weird though, because different parts of Belgium speak different languages. For example, Dutch, Flemish, German, French and English.

The safest? Stick with English. most of them should be able to understand.. if they’re staying in a bigger city i suppose.

We did couchsurfing for the first time.. and the place was so cool! we stayed in this castle room.. and well, camwhoring time!

The father is an artist, hence the walls are all brightly and nicely painted!

The little daughter called Enea is so so so so super duper cute! (ps, I don’t know why she always puts her hands there though)

First up was Brussels, and we had good food.

I even tried mussels (which i don’t really eat).. and it’s nice!!

and when i was walking out of the bar, some clown (i mean he was dressed up as one) just grabbed my face and i hurriedly turned to the side so i only got a kiss on my cheeks. well kiss on the cheek = bisous, so don’t get angry ok my dear? ben, who was walking behind me got quite a shock too.

and of course, we had to go to pretty brugges

finally back from Belgium after the long disappearance..

went to Brussels, Dendermonde, Aalst, Bruges and Ghent for the past few days. photos later because i have to cook dinner, do my laundry, pack up my room before Michelle and her friend comes over!

thought i could chat with you earlier.. but you were having dance. i had to go to school for class after that, as I had already missed my lecture in the morning due to my long stays in the toilet.

tutorial was alright, i could understand.. was rather tired though.. and my stomach just kept making funny noises, i think the guy beside me is wondering what in the world is happening to me.

i wanted to go for swimming after class (as in join the cca).. but then the pool is closed till 1 March for renovations. I tried to send an email to the prof in charge… but the mail is bounced because the mailbox is full..

hmm, so how?

sheesh. i was looking forward to swimming, because it’s indoor.. and i don’t want to just go on my own, because it costs me 2,50E to enter.. which is so freaking expensive!

i would rather run, but it’s so cold outside. well, not really that cold la.. i didn’t wear thermals at all today, just a tshirt, jeans and a trench coat.

but my legs were so cold without the thermals!!!

i think i’m acting colder and colder by the moment. i don’t mean the weather, i mean the attitude.. because…

i find myself responding less and less. just be glad that i even say “uh” sometimes.

went to polyglot meeting today.. met so many people of different nationalities! though i only managed to speak english, french and chinese (to a french, how weird. hahah) today.. i also met a fellow singaporean… and met a lyonnaise who could share my sentiments of how we prefer lyon to paris! lol.

well today i only had 2 hours of TD, and it wasn’t too bad because i understood what the prof was saying, and the questions she asked, and how to answer them! but of course, the problem was just responding in french so i just had to keep my mouth shut la of course. i don’t want to embarrass myself with my french. hahahaha.

i have TD homework again! for LV327. bleahhhh.

anyway went for chinese food today! my second time at la muraille du phenix. now i understand how yc goes there 18 times within 4 months even though he stays at Massy Palaiseau, which is like in Zone SIX and this restaurant is like in Zone ONE.

Please don’t ask me how much the transport is outside zone 2.. ehh because i have been profiting from some loopholes. HAHAHAHAH.

hi dear. i actually just woke up from a 1H30 nap. yes i went to sleep at 8plus pm, just a while after dinner, because i am so so so so damn tired!

i had SIX hours of lectures today. and boy, SIX hours in english is bad enough, but imagine them in French. I had to be constantly paying attention because some profs speak rather quickly and if i stone for 5seconds i wouldn’t know what’s happening anymore.

and i still have to rewrite my notes. cos it’s so damn messy and i don’t know why she kept drawing molecules and mechanisms. and talking at the same time, non stop. am i taking organic chem? i don’t think so. plus i still have to do a project, based on a journal. you can just imagine jess and i jumping up and down and high fiving when we saw that the journal article was in ENGLISH! thank God for American journals, I must say.

Plus, I have to do work for my TD (aka tutorials), and oh.. it’s only five pages long. with 2 in 1 printing. :P

plus i have my practical homework to do (even though my prof for another module is on strike).. oh, and it’s just 11 pages of work that’s all. plus i need to read 11pages of my polycopie (free notes!) for this module as well.

halfway during the lecture, i was thinking “shit, why did i come here?”.. and it turns out that jess is thinking the same thing too!

Oh gosh, i do really need some encouragement from you to hang on! hmm, from anyone else too.. if you can drop some nice nice encouraging messages on my blog.. that’s totally cool as well, because right now.. i feel almost like a living corpse.

it was so bad that when we saw the posters for developmental bio on the walls, then jess was saying that we are studying only until the “foetus”. i heard it as “fittest”… and the worst part? i tried to spell for her in english.. and i went “f-i-t-t-e-s”… and i couldn’t even get it right.

oh well, no time to waste, need to start on my work!

luckily food was damn good though! i should bring deardear here to eat when he comes over. it’s the cheapest chinese food around paris i believe. for 2-3E, you actually get a decent sized plate of food. whereas at other places, like those pseudo cai fan places, it’s about 3E for 100g of food.

ehh ok some nicer photos of chateau de versailles the other day. honestly, i think that the garden looks prettier. so i shall bring deardear down during spring time when all the flowers bloom and there’s the musical fountain show.

see? pretty right? i can’t believe it was still brown and green just the other day when krystle, yc and lester went. that day we went.. everything was covered in snow! you had to be wary of trees dropping clumps of snow onto your head! @^*#*#@&

basically i went to cite internationale to do my carte de sejour. i was the 13th in line.

i queued for TWO HOURS before i reached the counter to submit my documents.

yeah sure, they work at the speed of lightning.

and i thought that was it.

apparently not, i had to wait for my number to be called.

(by this time, my lecture had supposedly STARTED)

and then, they sent me upstairs to submit my documents, and for them to type something.

waited some more.

number was called, so i went to the counter to collect another piece of paper to make an appointment upstairs. i went upstairs, and submitted my form. waited somemore as he walked out of the room. was called to go to the counter as he booked an appointment for me.

was told to head back downstairs to submit the document.

basically, by the time i was done.. my lecture would have started for ONE HOUR already.

i ran all the way to the Metro, cursed the slow train, and when i reached Jussieu, i sprinted towards my Amphi 41A.

and then.. the amphi was EMPTY.

so i went to Acceuil Information, to check out what is the timing for the next class (yes, the information is actually NOT available online).. was told to go to secretariat pedagogigue to check out.

when i went there, had to wait some more, and thankfully the guy spoke to me in english after he realised i wasn’t french.. cos i started speaking in french all the way.. until he asked what section i was in.. and i told him that i was an exchange student, and i have absolutely no idea. apparently he’s sent the info, but he thinks that they may not have registered me for the class.

and i explained to him why i was late and that i needed the timing for the next class.. then he’s like “erm, actually.. there was no lecture this morning. the prof is on strike. another teacher came in to announce to the students that there was no class”

my response? “huh? what strike?”

he stared at me like as if i didn’t know the biggest event that happened this century.

he directed me to another building.. and it’s freaking hard to find. i tried to ask students.. they don’t know. i tried to ask the profs who are teaching level 2000 for sciences de la vie (since i’m taking level 3000 i thought they might know the admin better).. and they’ve never even heard of the room.

upon FINALLY reaching the door, it was locked and there’s a sign which directed us to another door.

and it turns out that this secretariat is on strike too, so she didn’t come to work.

but thank God the lab techs are so so so so nice! she gave me polycopie, lab protocol (cos i told her i don’t have printer! and i don’t have upmc card so i cannot enter the library to print as well), explained the modules to me.. IN ENGLISH. but it’s funny la. she thinks that i don’t know french as all.. so she was like “you know, the fish (with all the hand gestures), the worm, the frog*.. but yes yes i’m sure i know fish = poisson la. but since she’s so nice and she tried so hard.. must give her the credit for it.

and apparently they had a lab tech who just left, who’s a singapourienne!! and she was like “you want me to call her to come back and meet you?”

haha. and my gosh.. you know in singapore all the equipment in the lab is provided right? here isn’t. i’m supposed to get my own scapel, scissors (which they kindly agreed to get for me cos they have spare ones in the lab).. and i forgot to bring lab coat (so they’re getting for me as well). super nice right? so many nationalities in the room la! indian, tunisian, french, african, vietnamese.. wow.

and then.. i met one of my profs! cos this lab tech introduced “oh he will be teaching you”.. and my prof spoke to me IN ENGLISH! woohoo. the next thing i am going to do is ask if i can take exams in english, because he sounds like a totally nice guy.. and speaks good english!

oops. this is such a long post.

ok la, i’m tired. had fun during french class though. before going in.. jess opened the door when the other class was still inside and the prof sounded pissed cos she came out to scold lor.

but thank goodness she’s so funny. and she goes at such a nice comfortable pace somemore.

ok, should go and bathe.. and wash the dishes :(

honestly, i came back before 7pm.. and i’m TIRED.

oh gosh.

we were really hungry just now too.. we wanted to go to the garden.. since we were at chateau de versailles, but figured that it would be better to go there during spring instead (also because i’ve “saved” a ticket, thanks to the spoilt gate) when it would be prettier and all (dear, i bring you there during spring okay. u can use this free ticket, i can use the navigo passe.. with a few tweaks of course)

i think if i were to be fined each time.. i would have easily paid more than 200E already. but oh well, i have to keep my eyes open!

so we headed to macs (this place is so americanized, it has macs and starbucks side by side).. and.. just imagine 5 people.. and the food that we actually BOUGHT from macs.

other than 2 petit wraps, 4 milkshakes (strawberry, of course), and 1 flan…

jess and i were eating pain au chocolat from the boulangerie we bought in the morning (dammit, i should have just bought from school. it’s cheaper and nicer there, though i didn’t go to school today.. it’s 4 croissants OR 3 chocolate filled bread for 1,90E)…

we ate some chips,

The day before, we went to this chinese restaurant near Pantheon.

We order 6 dishes at the restaurant..
1. you ling ji (roasted chicken with some sauce on top. the direct translation is like oil poured on top of the chicken, but it’s not as oily as it sounds la)
2. bai cai something
3. mapo tofu (i know dear would love this! i will bring you there when you’re here ok??)
4. some chicken + bamboo shoot thingy
5. sweet and sour pork
6. some egg

seriously good! we ate to our fill for 5E (each, duh)! it’s better than the chinese food else where lor, per 100g it’s like more than 2E already! all thanks to yongchuen who recommended this place! photos are with crystal though.. who came from stockholm. lester came as well, from holland??? i can’t remember where..but they’re both on sep.

they came to our apartment to have bah kwa after that -_-”

and we were telling them not to make too much noise cos the walls are hollow, so yc asked “if i pee, will you all be able to hear?”

and so he went to the toilet.. and everyone kept silent.

yc: “oi, talk leh!”

and then when he started peeing.. you can seriously hear the echo! we all burst out laughing! lol.

today we went to chinatown at 13eme.. it was freaking snowing la! shit. so damn cold!!! :(

we went to tang freres, some frozen food place, paris star, don’t know what supermarkets la. saw lots of bottles of lee kum kee… but in the end we bought some oyster sauce, some chilli sauce from lee kum kee, a few pieces of fish fillet (5 or 6 i think), xiao bai cai (i think, i have no idea what the veggie names are called in chinese), 30 eggs, sausage, red wine from bordeaux, lemon (to marinate the fish), and of course, a brand spanking new non-stick pan. all for about 20E..

dammit, we saw a lot of nice food.. like the tang bao, the kind of chilli they have at crystal jade, curry paste.. wahh super tempted!

for dinner, we had ben and zhijian over (since they went with us to chinatown).. and boy, they were the cooks, whereas jess and i merely helped out as and when. like breaking eggs, draining broccoli, adding sausage to eggs.. hahaha.

i totally live in a sauna.

PS i have NO photos of chinatown because it was freaking snowing, and i had to carry the groceries still. plus it was too cold to whip my camera out of my pocket as well. hahaha. photos are with ben/zhijian i think. luckily zhijian is gentlemanly enough to lend me his gloves (cos i lent mine to jess).. although.. making us walk in the snow + damn cold wind… is damn sickening la!

I was putting up at Santosh’s place, at Trocadero.

yes, this is how it looks like. Swanky place,  somewhere I would avoid eating, because a salad can easily cost me 15E here.. which could buy me a whole complete meal elsewhere (Entree + plat + dessert) and with some money to spare for a student’s meal at Pomme de Pain (Panini + drink), and I still have some more money to spare. This is how expensive this area is. I don’t ever eat at this area (unless you count eating in his room)

This is what you see just right after exiting the Trocadero station. Now, you get why it’s expensive in this area? I was excited by the sparkly lights and the beam of Eiffel Tower at first.. but as time goes by.. the interest just wears down. It’s not really fun to see it every single day.

i know this was already done on facebook.. but it’s just an update of this week so far.

1. dragging luggages in the snow kills. it’s like when u pull, a huge pile of snow just gets stuck underneath, and they probably weigh like 5kg.. and then u have to carry your 30kg luggage up to another clean spot.. and the cycle continues. and it’s damn slippery when it melts, which explains how i fell onto the snow when i was trying to get the luggage out of the door and it got stuck :(

2. grocery shopping in paris is actually cheap! we spent 20,70 euros today.. and guess what we bought? 1L grapefruit juice, 2L orange juice, 1 whole bag of onions, 5kg of potato, 12 toilet rolls, 12 packets of yoghurt, 15 fish croquettes, 1 bag of tomatos, 1 bag of golden apples, 1 packet of spaghetti, bread, olive oil, garlic powder.. not bad right?

3. shopping is good as well. jennyfer has tube tops.. a 3 for the price of 3 offer.. so it’s like 6 euros for THREE tops. that’s like FOUR BUCKS. and of course, i totally love united colours of benetton and sisley.. tops for 8euros, jeans for 10euros.. my gosh.

4. shifting in and unpacking is really tough work. my muscles are aching. not to mention the >10kg worth of groceries we bought. omg.

5. somehow, they like it dim here? the lighting in my room isn’t too good, and it’s worse in jess’ room (or rather, living room) cos 1 light is spoilt :( i am comtemplating cheap lamps from ikea.

6. i had a horrible dream that involved my dear being forced to marry another woman that was very bitchy and someone he didn’t like. but later after 5 years, we met accidentally and still felt the love for each other, so he divorced her and we eloped. that woman, was no other than.. the one who acted as joanne peh’s sister in the nonya show. :P

7. i don’t like the heater in my room, i think it’s too hot. i know i can adjust it, but i’m lazy at the moment.

8. i really need to shift the position of my table, it’s stretching the lan cable so much.. that the cable is actually resting on my lap now.

9. my room looks totally neat and organized! (for now) but i really need to do laundry. and washing the dishes tonight, cos it’s jess’ turn, but her nails broke beyond her cuticles.

10. my cuticles keep breaking as well. i tried to move the table? break. i tried to open the damn heavy door at upmc? break. dammit.

11. i really want to bathe. i spent my time at the suburbs yesterday (at supelec).. trying to get jess’ luggages and shift out.. but then sneha & shradda went grocery shopping.. and we waited for about 3 hours.. and were cold and hungry. and since the last bus out was at 9pm.. we couldn’t come back to central paris.

12. i finally understood why the other day on the rer.. this woman asked “is this paris?” then i was thinking.. “HUH??” isn’t it ALL paris around here? like within 100km or something? then i realised on the signboard at the suburbs.. it just refers central paris to paris.. everywhere else is called banlieue.

13. i cannot wait for my dear to come in april!

14. i am going to die with my modules.

15. we managed to choose any level of french class that we liked, because we couldn’t fit the one we were supposed to take in our timetables.

16. sounds weird, but i cannot wait for school to start. 1045am on monday!

17. we made plans to go to grenoble yesterday. half an hour later, we are going to disneyland instead (paying 10euros hhahah, cos one of our friend has the passeport! which means he goes in free, and brings 5 people in for 10euros each)

18. and we are going to spend our valentine’s day eve having a party at my place (i have no idea how many people are sleeping over here.. i think it’s probably 8? or maybe more, including the ecp people as well… not that we don’t have enough floor space anyway. and then we are going to pay 16euros for train to and fro + ticket to chateau de versailles! :) (there’s a promotion)

19. jess and i will be going for some festival of young talents thingy this fri.. for some free concerts! (we are such cheapos)

20. also, since we are cheapos, we are planning to go to louvre aft 6pm, when it’s free as well.

21. and becuase we are such cheapos, we wanted to see if our insurance that we bought in singapore can let us NOT pay for securite sociale, because that’s a hefty 195E!

22. i have not combed my hair ever since i left singapore because i forgot to bring my comb. and because combs at monoprix is abt 7E, i am being a cheapo and using my fingers instead.

23. i still cannot understand why paris is the city of love. what love? everyone’s so hurried here.

24. we tried to be bitches and went “Pardon!” on the travelators, just like what the busy french people do everyday. in the end? we still got cut by other people who went “Pardon!” as well.

yesyes i’m ALIVE. i just didn’t have internet that’s all. and i had to walk all the way out to mcdonald’s to get free internet…

i just moved into my residence today. it’s quite big, by paris standards. 40m².. that’s not too bad.

it’s got a toilet, shower, 2 study tables, some cabinets, shelves, wardrobe, bedside tables, chairs, 1 living room, 1 bedroom, kitchenette.

not too shabby really.

and i’ve got awesome italian neighbours (both female, but one of the girl’s bf is over tonight, and one of them is quite chio! plus they speak english! woohoo).. who so kindly let me put my luggage in their place while jess and i went back to trocadero to get more of our stuff. cos this residence’s checkin time is only 8pm to 9pm.. for reasons beyond my comprehension.

it snowed today!

and i HATE it.

firstly, when i tried to shift the luggage out of the door, i slipped and felt (but that amount of snow gave me some cushion though. plus i was wearing a few layers so i couldn’t feel anything, just that my BLACK trench coat turned WHITE instantly.

secondly, it’s cold.

thirdly, i had to shift my luggage out in the thick snow.. and it’s really damn tough. cos it’s a trolley bag, so basically it collects snow underneath it.. and my luggage just seems to get heavier and heavier, because of all the snow thats building up.

fourthly, it’s slippery and wet. and after the snow, it rained. dammit. i even saw this poor lady that just fell and scraped her hands and legs :(

arrgh. snow is depressing. really.

at first you go “omg, it’s soooo pretty!”

trust me, 5 minutes out there with a heavy luggage, you’re cursing at the snow. :(

all’s good here, except we have to shift jess’ stuff from the suburbs tmr. OMG.

repeat scenario of today, because it will be snowing tomorrow as well.. and boy, the bus system in the suburbs is closed when there’s snow??

all in all, i am really missing my dear right now.. but i don’t want to sms him at the moment cos im worried that it might wake him up.. so i’ll do so later.. like around 730 sgp time when he’s awake. i hope.

shopping here is really good omg. i bought a united colours of benetton jeans for 10E, that’s like 20 SGD. no way am i gonna get that price back in singapore.

but anyway it’s the wrong season for me to shop now, seeing how i won’t need any of these items back in singapore. however, ankle boots at promod are going at 10euros! oh la la!

other than that.. things aren’t very cheap here. though mcdonalds has good and cheap milkshakes for 0.95E, hamburger for 0,95E.. but i seriously need to cook. at the alimentation generale near my residence, pasta is going for 1,80E, wines for 2,30E.. canned food for slightly over 1E… not too bad i would say. though i will check out leader price soon, because these small shops are more expensive.

dance sucked today.

I am currently facing an internal struggle. And why is that so? Yes dear you are right, it’s about dance, all over again…

I know that you are leaving real soon, in fact, in less than 4 days’ time.  I know that though we have been spending weekends together, I will always have to leave for dance prac at night. This means cutting out meeting short, and i know that you are not happy about it. well, me neither.

I dunno if agreeing to help michael out with his item is the correct choice last year. he was one of the first to ask me to help him out with this item. i think he already had a concept of what he wanted to do then. it’s something about saving the earth; deforestation and how we are digging a deeper shit hole for outselves to jump into by all the senseless wastage of paper. it sounded really interesting at that point in time and he was really persuasive and nice about it. that has hence translated into less meeting time and led to bouts of unhappiness.

to be honest, i really enojoyed dancing. no, not because i can get to interact with girls or any rubbish like that. it’s cos when i am at prac, i feel relaxed, and i feel that there is really something for me to do, and life is not about dreading going to camp every morning when i open my eyes and only wish of the day is for the clock to strike 6 when i can zoom home on my bike and repeat the cycle the next day all the way till the weekend. other than looking forward to seeing you, the other thing that i look forward to each week is dance prac, and / or the supper session after that with yy and gang.

with dance, now there is prac to look forward to, more interactions with friends whom i would otherwise not see for ages, more laughter, more stupid corny comments etc.

i told myself that i will only help michael out with 1 item, the one concerning deforestation. before xmas, he told me he needed another guy for his item for exxonmobil campus concert, or emcc for short. again i gave in. just last week, fen and zhimin said they needed some more guys cos the guys they are having now are not the correct ones, and requested me and yy to help. again, i gave in, this time under peer pressure from yy. but i dun think that will really affect you as you are halfway across the globe by then. maybe involving myself in dance over the weekend can bring my mind away from you, by occupying it with something else.

you are not the only one that is against me dancing. even my mum disapproves of it. she made a hoo haa when i told her that i iwll be joining dance again in feb, purly out of concern that i will be bogged down by fatigue, which was what happened last sept. i did not tell her how i felt, nor did i express my interest for dance and hope for her understanding. instead, i just said i will take care of myself, and left it as that. maybe it is due to the inability to express myself, for at that moment in time all the words in the world left me, and my mind was a blank. i did not know how to tell her what joining dance prac meant, and how much colour it injected into my otherwise monotonous life, esp during the upcoming months which i will be spending in your absense. do not take me wrong, for i am definately not putting the blame on you. dun forget who is the one who encouraged you to go for exchange when all the problems against that seemed insurmountable.

i am not ashamed of what i am doing, but deep down, part of me hoped that you will not turn up for my performance. no it is not because the actions with my partners are too intimate for your liking, cos they are nowhere near. it is because, with someone i love amongst the audience brings pressure: the pressure to perform to my very best to show that all the meeting time sacrificed did not go to waste. and i’m not one that works well under pressure, not since i know any mistake from me would ruin the item, ruin the effort put in my all my friends, and ruin mike’s hope for a impactful message.

i think i owe you an explaination, for all the meetings abruptly cut short, for all the “not turning up online” nights and for all the disappointments. you have the right to know why you are missing out so much, and i hope this entry will make things crystal clear.

Since this is my first post on this blog, please allow me the opportunity to say a few things :)

1) thank you dear for letting me use your blog. i just think this is a superb idea to let me communicate with you through this blog. firstly it saves money. then it saves the hazzard of having to meet / call each other online as we will have to be online at different times of the day. and lastly having a goldfish memory, i think it helps to let me write what i can remember for that day instead of telling you over the phone a few days later, when i have forgotten everything.

2) i shall prove you wrong and not use any bloody fucking vulgarities on your blog. otherwise i shall grow shorter than you.

3) please do not mind my poor grammar of refusing to make the first letter after each full stop or the name of a place / person whatsover in caps cos i simply dun give a damn.

4) if you are irritated by what you see here now and dun think you can accept, you dun have a choice cos angele will be posting here regularly as well about her life in france. if you care about her like i do, you know what to do…

5) i am too lazy to upload photos, so if you read posts written by me, you gotta have a vivid child-like imagination. As Einstein said “dun lose that child in you…”

6) i shall make point 5) easier for everyone by writing a HW at the beginning of each post from me so you can choose not to read it should you not have the necessary qualities listed in pt 5.

because my luggage is quite filled up after all!

although i haven’t packed them in ziplocs.. so they pretty much take up loads of space at the moment (stuff like blankets, sleeping bags, coats are very bulky)

and because it’s winter and a -7degC at the moment (though it would be colder when i arrive), it means i can’t leave out those winter wear!! bleahh.

oh yeah, and perhaps it’s because my mum (like all mums do) gets worried and shoves loads and loads of stuff for me to bring.

and i’m still going to ikea with jess to see if we need anything else (else chopping sheet, not board as that would be too bulky and heavy)….

oh no oh no.

hmm shit. i really need to sleep. its like 0321 right now, and i still want to go to the french embassy at 0900 to collect my passport!

ironically while they are so sfficient, my 11k is still nowhere near my account. wonder what exactly are they doing. seriously.

zj and i left earlier cos we had to rush back to school to go to the it coop @ LT26 to settle stuff for our laptop. I went to collect my laptop battery (and yaay, it lasts for about 5 hours now, instead of the pathetic 1 hour before that.. ) then since i told him it would be covered under warranty (Read: GRATUIT. FREE. MIAN FEI. MIAN LUI. i’m sorry those are all the languages i know of), so he went to replace his battery and his keyboard..

and then i look at my own keyboard.. and i wonder how much dust i’ve collected over the years… *shudders*

went to yih to eat sucky food, so that it was more convenient for my flu jab later on when uhwc is open.

then went to it coop to get a mike (for the house com, in order for my parents to skype with me), and then to yih (since the big hoohah about them crediting into the wrong account, i went to submit a withdrawal of giro form), and guess who i saw???

i mean, seriously do they have to screw up every single thing? like how many things have they screwed up so far?

1. not confirming the number of places with insa
2. trying to send 15 people over for exchange, when the cohort over there is like 25 per year. and 25 includes EVERYONE.
3. telling us we were bonded, and then we found out that we weren’t. they could have just told us that the “bond” isn’t guaranteed and we could have applied for other unis last time. with modules in english, i might add.
4. not assisting us in our applications to other unis.
5. suddenly forcing us to go for exchange, or pay for breaking the bond
6. crediting my money into a wrong account number
7. refusing to call up the bank to cancel the transfer, when i specially told them that dbs told them to do so, and they said they would sit and wait for the rejection letter instead, and then wait for the money to be back into their account, and then they would giro the money into my mum’s account.

anyway, we had a great brunch today, with dear & my family, eating yummy bak chor mee :) but then, dad forgot to bring his pants out, so that he could get the tailor to alter it! so dear & i had to go back to fetch it… and then it was raining. dammit.

i was trying to find my poncho but i have absolutely no idea where i’ve placed it. however, i did manage to find random stuff like my rifle cleaning kit (like as if i need it now!), my number 4s (although i can’t find my gore-tex!), my boots (which were a great help to mel in sydney), liquid kiwi (which i kindly donated to deardear), solid fuel, gloves & stuff for field camp…

i am seriously a karang-guni.

i don’t even need all these stuff (though i might bring my boots with me cos i might want to do some climbing/trekking), but i guess stuff like those brown shirts, polo tees, black shorts, pt shorts.. kinda make pretty good sleepwear. lol.

i honestly have so much rubbish in my room, which i didn’t really realise until my mum made me pack my room before i leave.. lol.

oops. digressed too much again. oh ya so anyway, we went to my gran’s place, which dear is there for the first time. watched tropic thunder.. which is so hilarious! hope that deardear is comfy being around though :)

went to swensen’s after that to celebrate my bro’s birthday.. and i think my sore throat got worse from the sticky chewy chocolate :( and to think i skipped all the fried/spicy mains, and settled for smoked salmon baked rice.. but i just couldn’t resist ice cream :( and chocolate. and the pile in the fridge bought by dear’s parents will just have to wait till my sore throat goes away… :(

omg, this reminds me of my hopeless attempts to resist gelatos at Annecy, and how we managed to spend like 6euros in 1 hour! ok wait, i think i spent 4euros. but still! who can resist rum & raisin.. and the rum is so so so strong and nice! and melon too! oh-so-refreshing on a hot summer’s day! if i go broke in europe it must be due to gelatos and chocolate. although i have no idea where are the nice gelato places in paris though :(

haish. you know, i’m still have bloody mixed feelings about paris.. even though i know i ought to be just enjoying myself and stop stressing out! but on one hand.. i’m super excited! and on the other hand.. i feel damn guilty!!

i know i haven’t placed stuff like rice cooker (don’t laugh, i need to cook rice there okay! or cous cous!!), foldable pail (which is seriously NOT bulky at all!), chopping sheet, bedsheets, blanket, sleeping bag, some condiments & food… but most of my clothes are in. and i mean… WINTER CLOTHES. and i’m bringing 4/5 coats over.. hmm though i guess my leggings/stockings/high socks/leg warmers don’t really take up too much space…

okay, i’ll just take it that my packing skills are brilliant, since hw’s parents asked me to pack some of their bulky stuff back from oz the other time.. since i had so much empty space left in my potato bag…

either that, or sitting on ziploc bags to force the air out really works.

guess what?

i thought it was my mum’s account, since she uses that to pay via giro for my school fees and all..

but NO, it’s NOT.

OMG.

and that account number is not even a proper one, because it has wayyyyy toooo many numbers.

and it looks remotely like my aikido joint account (because i was the treasurer then), but i’ve closed the account in oct 08, after i’ve stepped down. but the digits are a little wrong.

WTF?

i seriously don’t even know whose account did they credit into!?!???

and 8k is not a very small sum at times like this. who knows the person took the money and went to like indo or something, since 8k converted to rupiah is quite a sum of money? he could be like some millionaire in some remote village la!

and the best part?

I FREAKING WROTE MY ACCOUNT NUMBER AND GAVE IT TO THEM, AS WITNESSED BY MY DAD AND MW.

i was doing very important stuff okay! such as settling stuff for my exchange, settling stuff for my research.. i have like ONE THOUSAND AND ONE things to settle before flying, and thank YOU, for adding pain to my migraine, which is already causing my head to split.

i am going out now, to settle the bloody bank stuff for you, afterwhich i shall just WALK AROUND. yes, instead of coming home and listening to you scream at me every single second. even if i can’t buy anything, walking around looking at stuff is much more satisfying, really.

okay, so today is the start of the new year.

well, i don’t feel any different from how i did yesterday, really. i still feel just as useless and clueless as ever. but anyway i decided to write this entry because i got tired of trying to decipher all the french instructions on the various websites.

well 2008 has been a rather eventful year i guess. but just like any other year, life’s always full of ups and downs.

January 2008

Amazing things happened, much to my delight! It was a sweet sweet surprise for me, contrary to the year before because of some incidents. But it was good in a way I guess, it made me realise what a selfish bitch i was (well i’m still quite a bitch at times, i know), and so.. it was good to have the new ME in the new YEAR.

And before school started, I’ve learnt to let my hair down & relax. Okay, maybe not BEFORE school started, but rather, during the first 2 weeks or so, where it was mostly orientation & introduction. I’ve gone to kayak at Chinese Gardens (I never knew that you could kayak prior to that!), caught French films at the Central Library (and the staff refused to believe that we took French and ALMOST didn’t allow us to watch the R21 film, which we received weird stares from the guy behind when the sex scenes were played. but come on, it’s a FRENCH film. does it say anything?)

Oh, and then there was inter-hall games, which made me lose a friend. All because of a stupid relay that I didn’t put her in, and I swam instead. I really regret that decision, and it made me feel so much like a failed captain. If she had told me how much she wanted to swim because she’s graduating at the end of the semester, I would gladly have let her take ALL of my places (okay, maybe except ONE event, otherwise it’s quite silly being the captain and not swimming in any event at all). But, from that very day onwards, I received dagger-like stares from her.. and it’s soooooo awkward, because I’m rather close to her best friends, and I have to manage talking to them without talking to her (well, mainly because she refuses to talk to me anymore, even though I said hi)

For the next few months, however, I don’t think there was anything very exciting happening. I was just trying to cherish every moment that I have with my dear, since he was graduating at the end of the semester. But I’ve learnt the meaning of trust & respecting privacy. I’m not perfect, but I do try my best.

I remembered that eventful Valentine’s day though, whereby we totally walked by the place without realising that.. and spent so much time walking around Botanic gardens.. only to realise that place is closed for the day. However, we did manage to have a good meal at Cluny Court, somewhere called Karma Kettle & Rhapsody.

Then came May 2008, when he had finished his course at NUS. Boy, were the days different after that! It sure felt weird not being able to see each other every day and every night, or walk to the dining hall together to get our meals, or studying at the same table in his or my room, or slipping neon orange post it notes under the door, or him waking me up by coming into my room and giving me a big hug while i was still lying on the bed…

But other than HW, i still missed the company of people like Ann as well, where we could have countless chats together.. and we had EXACTLY the same modules so we practically went everywhere together (except sometimes we’re in different groups for a module), and she was like my bestest companion in hall (after dear of course!)

Of course, there were other people that I missed.. but I didn’t spend as much time with them, and I didn’t have as much telepathy with them (like both HW & Ann can TOTALLY read my mind).. and well there’s no need to have a huge quantity of friends. It’s just the quality that matters.

And so, the new term started. I began shutting from home to school, which took about an hour and a half (well you have to factor in jams, delays due to rain, etcetc).. and discovered how to walk from buona vista to nus (and saved on transport and time, since 95 is IMPOSSIBLE to get on during peak hours and i don’t want to wait THREE buses before i can board the bus).

I took like FIVE FREAKING CORE MODULES, which was so damn damn heavy, and probably made my CAP suffer. I only took those modules because a lot of them were pre-requisites for my modules at INSA…

which we got rejected by INSA.

and thought that we were NOT going to insa.. and we settled with that decision…

only to receive countless emails, and a big hiatus later.. we got accepted by UPMC.. and i was really happy until….

….

And then joo came, and the Movie Clique met up, post-christmas. and it made me feel like i want to go back to JC all over again…

WOW.

it’s been quite a year, indeed.

And I thank God for the good friends that I’ve had around, who’ve accompanied through my ups and downs. Nx, Joo, Hl, Ann, YL, HW.. i thank you all!

then i realised it’s “Le Prévert” instead. still, we must always remember to look out for the tram when crossing the road, because there was once we were happily chatting and forgot!! thank goodness the tram station is nearby (therefore trams approaching and leaving La Doua Gaston Berger wouldn’t be travelling at too fast a speed)

well, take the funiculaire.. and you’ll end up at fourviere! (and somehow deardear pronounces it as though it’s a vulgarity! lol)

la basilique! otherwise known as notre dame de fourviere. and a couple of other names i can’t remember. pretty right?? 

bellecour was our favourite hangout place after school! this librarie privee offers cheap campus textbooks (haha, which we could sell for a profit back in sgp even though it’s unused)

rue Victor Hugo. in case you don’t know who he is… I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame right?? Zara is just down the street if i’m not wrong. if not, it’s just down the other street in the opposite direction. I once walked down the streets of Bellecour, past Cordelier, and then to Perrache, and then the bus interchange to take a bus back! well, just to explore around a bit la. 

and i suppose you can spot McDonalds.. and this is where the bouncers for the toilets are!

and to end it off. eat kebab at this place! i know there are like plenty of kebab shops but this one is the best deal! (this is besides the point that i didn’t pay for my kebab, accidentally.. because some people forgot to count a few of our shares when we went to the toilet). anyway, for say about 3 euros, you can get a huuuuggge bread (choice is up to you). i’m not sure how long, but it seems longer than the 6 inch ones at subway, but less than a footlong.. and it’s filled with lettuce, tomatoes, whatever other veggie, the meat that you choose, different kinds of sauces (there’s even spicy chilli!), and a whole big handful of fries! and because it’s so damn filling, you can just share it between 2 girls la. plus, there’s a chio cambodian-chinese waitress working there.

oh wow. googlemaps is certainly interesting, don’t you think? hahah.

wanted to blog about this yesterday but didn’t have the cable since i was at dear’s place. and i didn’t have photoscape there either.

anyway, it was such a romantic night out! we had great food at Mr. Curry at central (hl, don’t you just agree how much the architecture of that building sucks? it’s soooooooo super easy to get lost la! like places whereby you think there’s the toilet there.. it actually leads you to more shops. -_-”’)

well, i had spicy cod roe omelette with curry rice, whereas deardear had chicken and mushroom omelette with curry rice. mymy, was the curry good! the onion soup was good too (i mean, you know i hate onion, so for me to say that the soup is good.. it means it’s good la!)

and omelette + curyy = DAMN SHIOK! 

and right now there’s some 100% promotion, so basically for example you ate $20 worth, they’ll give you $20 voucher to use the next time! so you could jolly well have your next meal free!

but that shop (Decorhut) at central has interesting and quirky stuff! (though pricy, but at least you won’t look like some other singaporean’s clone!)

okay so anyway dear didn’t enter (cos he was worried that he had drunk too much, how was he going to ride a bike back? and with me as the pillion, so he didn’t fill that it was very safe. awww.)

anyway, thanks to googlemaps street view, i can see that i’m staying right next to Restaurant lez Arts, which is next to Brasserie du Parc (since there’s bread and a restaurant there, i doubt i will starve to death. and plus.. breadshop is good! this means we can have good breakfast (and maybe lunch? buy, then have picnic on grass patches in school?) and it’s cheaper than most eating places!

further down the street (54) is some bar.. well, this means good entertainment when i want it i guess!

okay, and there’s a bank & atm nearby (good for emergencies!)

further down the bank, there is la boutique (okay, good for clothing emergencies!), followed by boucherie (okie, means we can have meat for dinner easily!), oh wait.. but it’s halal! okay, i guess that means no pork. lol.

ohhh, and there’s la halle chaussures nearby (means i can buy shoes nearby!), and then another brasserie!

okok i found an alimentation generale!! (ehh basically like a foodstore.. this is where we can buy foodstuff to cook dinner! yaay!)

guess the price of my residence.

hoho, because it’s subjected to APL (some aid, as we’re under 26).. and because we can apply a long term visa..

it’s gonna be like 150euros per person.

i mean, it sounds ex maybe.. but then in halls right now it’s already like 100sgd per week right? and that excludes meals as well… so technically.. it’s not that ex for my accomodation in france la.

the downside? i have to take the metro though.

oooh, but if i take from Stalingrad, then i wouldn’t have to change line at all! i can take the pink line all the way to Jussieu, 15 stops. i can take by other ways… such as take from Stalingard (pink line), take 3 stops to Gare de l’Est (purple line), 6 stops to Chatelet les Halles (pink line) (where the horrendous incident of me alighting from the train, and the train door closed, leaving jo behind, occured), then 3 stops to Jussieu. ehh although i save 3 stops, i think i rather just take the former route. it seems less complicating. (and less trains to wait for, so it should save time.)

4. settle accomodation. give confirmation to upmc quickly. also apply for APL.
5. get my shoe soles fixed (eh, just give them extra friction because some of them are wearing out. need to find cobbler!)
6. buy air tickets (lufthansa $1606.92 inc taxes, check out qatar)
7. pack luggage (remember clothes for winter, spring & summer!)
8. check out eurail passes. also check out if we want to get the HI cards for better deals when backpacking. or maybe check out couchsurfing instead.
9. bring my europe on a budget book! so that i can tour ma.
10. check out what visa is needed to visit scandinavia, and also if i need any additional passes for switzerland, not sure about the Schengen thing.

12. settle NASA exchange award, and also take SEP loan for spare cash (I don’t want to travel halfway then realise i don’t have money to survive)

okay, so that’s the uni, and that’s the famous jardin des plantes just right beside it. UMPC is pretty convenient, since there are metro stations nearby. and it’s just next to the famous river seine!

okay, so i suppose you can see that upmc is also like maybe 500m away from notre dame de paris! (must state which one, since notre dame just means our lady.. so technically lots of catholic churches are called notre dame de __________)

why? because we sent in our applications on wed morning… and we received the acceptance on thursday morning… (but i didn’t check my nus email till just now, so i just found out. hahaha)

okok, time to start emailing and settling stuff.

it looks like my problem is getting worse. i thought like, hey, it’s the holidays.. i should get more sleep… right?

well, apparently not.

apparently ever since the exam period, and i’ve been sleeping late.. the habit just continued… and got worse and worse by the day… 

(okay, maybe better.. because when i had to rush lab reports, i didn’t sleep at all…)

so oh well, it started with sleeping at 2am. which is like pretty normal if you were staying in hall anyway. 

and then it become 3am.. and i’m like freaking wide awake you know.. i wasn’t in a going-to-die state. 

and then it dragged on till 4am (just like jess.. which explains why we’re both online so late)

and then last night, or rather should i say, this morning… i slept at 6AM!!!

oh shit. i just remembered something. i drank a whole MUG of Gloria Jean’s yesterday.. could that be the reason? Since I don’t drink coffee often, maybe like when i do actually take it, it takes effect? I remembered i used to drink nescafe iced mocha (just one can), and that could keep me awake the whole night doing lab report, plus TWO LECTURES in school. oh, and plus lunch and the journey back of course. 

oops. 

but seriously those nights (or mornings, rather) that i’ve been sleeping at 4am.. it’s like… i have nothing to do.. and yet i try to find something to do. i don’t know why.. 

it’s CRAZY. 

and it’s not like i take an afternoon nap therefore i am not sleepy at night you know.. 

oh man. my body is messed up.

Finally the exams are over and we’re back in Cafe Del Mar again! It’s always a great chillout place, especially since I don’t fancy clubbing, and this place serves alcohol in a much cooler, relaxing ambience, just beside the beach. Top it up with fantastic food (albeit expensive), and not-so-expensive drinks… it definitely feels like a vacation.

Before heading down to Cafe Del Mar, we went to this NatGeo thing in Vivo. (like wasn’t it the Spanish place before this???)
And hl just dragged me to the Red Box to try out. I think the aim of that box is to test the power of Gore Tex!

The temperature dipped to  about -1 degree Celsius, but honestly it wasn’t that cold! but that Gore Tex costs like 300SGD though. what a hefty price. Otherwise, together with the nice design, it would have made a great winter wear for Paris!

Okay, so after that we headed down to Cafe Del Mar at Sentosa!

I don’t know the results from the french uni yet.. will have to wait and see.. oh please please let it be… ok la, any news is fine actually.

because if i get to go, then i wouldn’t have to pay for the bond. and plus there’s another 3-4k from NASA exchange awards. (which obviously has to wait for our acceptance letter to arrive first). so technically it’s something like we’re given 6-7k to do our exchange…

and then if I get rejected, well then.. i wouldn’t have to pay that 3k anyway. i mean, the bad thing is i get stuck in nus la. and most of the world has just disappeared for exchange.. but oh well.. you know it’s still ok la i suppose.

jess and i were walking around raffles city/city link mall for a while.. and ultimately we settled on a bench outside blum & co, and started people-watching. lol. but after that we started to look at the models on display..

and seriously, right now.. all the nice clothes are like winter wear la! like stockings with boots + a dress on top. classic. hoho.

oh well, it might be a white christmas. i don’t know..

but poor wanying la! she thought that she wasn’t going for exchange.. so she booked tickets and is in lyon now.. then just yesterday, the chem eng people got accepted to ecole centrale, so.. she has to like fly back, settle all her visa and stuff.. then fly there again. wahh, super a lot of money on airfare la!

erm. hahah. as in you can imagine. i can’t figure out the head and the tail of this story. maybe i should check out the first part to find out more. well anyway, the effects were pretty cool, but not as big scale as the previous ones by brosnan i guess. i mean like craig drove an alfa romeo? but alfa isn’t even like… the cars that brosnan drove!

i didn’t really get what the story was about, and why the heck did bond seem to just act on his own accord without his superiors’ orders..

final verdict: don’t bother catching the show in the cinemas.

2. Paris Je T’aime

ooh, i just realised it’s from the producer of “amelie” as well. hahaha

18 different short stories about the different arrondisements of paris. erm, if you don’t like short stories and endings that make you think then i guess this wouldn’t be what you like.

this one is damn funny. he’s like some tourists who just came to Paris and is reading brochures about Paris, and it states that it’s the city of lovers, lovers of history, lovers of music… etcetc.. and lovers of love.

across the other side is some parisian who kept shouting at him, and then when a train came, that guy’s gf just walked up to this tourist and gave him a french kiss (which he later spotted some spots on her face which could be some contagious disease that he was warned to avoid in the pamphlets).. then that guy from across got jealous, came over, punched the hell out of this tourist, and then eventually he and the girl walked off happily.

this is about this blind guy who meets this girl who was rehearsing for an audtion, they fell in love, she kept screaming.. then she calls him one day to tell him “our love was like the autumn….”, and then she asked if he was still there and could hear her.. and he said “no, i see you”

this one’s about some angmoh guy, who wants to promote hair stuff suited for Asian hair, makes this woman blond, styled all their hair to the westernized styles, then she asked if he liked the photo (the one she was blond) and he said, no, and preferred her with the original Asian look.

basically i think this is one of those shows whereby you can just watch, find it amusing, but that’s it. there’s no head, no tail.. and no storyline perhaps. but maybe the diverse culture of the diffferent arrondisements is what they’re trying to portray. anyway, there’s no english subtitles (only malay or chinese, i can’t remember), so good luck if you don’t know french.

should you watch? ehh, i don’t know. it’s up to you. quite funny though. hahaha.

3. Le fabuleux Destin D’amelie Poulain (but i think you would have to google just “Amelie” to find it)

she was a pretty eccentric child, just like her pretty eccentric parents, but basically she became cut off from the social world after her mum died. sounds like a typical story?

well, guess how her mum died? because some tourist was on top of this church that they were praying at, and as they walked out, the tourists jumped off, and fell on her mother.

that aside, her way of like chasing guys and helping people is pretty weird, but nevertheless i enjoyed the show loads! ps, in french by the way, but there’s english subtitles!

haha, she loves to take revenge for collignon, as his boss (the groceries seller) is always calling him an idiot and stuff. one day, she saw the key hanging outside the boss’ door so she made a copy.. and voila! she replaced his toothpaste with foot cream, changed his shoes to one that’s wayyy smaller, etcetc.

she loves going to cinema, but not because of the show, but rather, she likes to turn around and watch other people’s expression as they’re watching the movie..

eh well, she finally dares to chase after him, and thankfully he returned to the house, and obviously he entered her house and they had sex after this. well, what do you expect? french movies are full of sex. lol.

anyway, overall i really loved this show! it’s so damn funny, so damn different from your normal singaporean life.. watch it! ps. i think audrey tautou is so pretty!

4. Wild Child

this is one of those chick flicks i suppose. a wild californian girl gets too wild, and her father sends her off to the boarding school in the uk.. and at first she totally hated it, acting like a real bi-atch and bimbotic. but later she realizes her true friends, finds her true love.. kinda a cinderella type of storey with a few twists here and there (like how the head girl tried to set her up and stuff)

just finished watching kungfu panda cos my mum bought the vcd. and honestly, it’s really good! and i can’t believe they create names like Master Oogway, erm, which is obviously, a tortoise!

lol.

but overall the show was rather funny, lots of interesting kungfu moves (ironic how the angmohs and not the ah tiongs who came up with the movie), and of course, great moral of the stories. hahah.

such as “the secret ingredient is nothing”. aka we all have to believe in ourselves and that there’s no scecret ingredient at all. as the panda’s dad said (although his dad is like a CHICKEN and he’s a panda), “to make something special, we have to first believe that it is special”.

oh well, lots of motivational thoughts in the movie i guess, like how on earth you try to  convert a big fat panda into a dragon warrior.

well, deardear is finally back home! like FINALLY! damn, i was wondering why he didn’t reply my smses, then he said it’s because he didn’t receive anything when he was there, and once he reached sgp, there was a stream of messages coming in… oops. hahha. i guess that’s my doing :X

but sadly, i have to take care of my bro at home tomorrow (cos the babysitter’s son is like passing out or something. erm, not that pass out. i mean POP).. so i guess i would have to bring my bro everywhere.. such as changing my passbook (because i haven’t done so since the passbook is full for like 2 months already.. was busy studying, so they just sent those statements. lol. i think they gave up on me. hahah)

need to bank in money into citibank atm (to keep the interest rates of the step up account going, and also not to pay for that charge if the average balance falls below that of the previous month)…

need to do some christmas shopping. wanted to buy something for my dear from river island, but unfortunately, there wasn’t anything really nice in there :(

need to pick up my parcel from the post office (stupid la, the time that they delivered to my house i was at home la! but i didn’t even see or hear any post man coming coming! and when i tried to call in for them to re-send the item, the stupid line is always engaged. i wonder how efficient our postal service is.. like they’re always losing the stuff that joo sends to me. or rather, the card came, and the present’s missing. like wth. i think you can pretty much guess what’s going on. shit)

need to buy a fluorescent light thingy.. cos the circular thingy that’s meant to be for the light on my ceiling blew, and i’ve been pretty much living in darkness in my room for the past 2 days. okay fine, i survive on a study lamp (which is pretty bright thankfully).. but the surface area which is shines on isn’t that huge.. so each time i want to pick up something from the corner of my room, i have to like adjust the position of it.  -_-”’

then again, i’ll probably wait for my dad to buy it during the weekends, because i have no idea how many watts/volts should i get, the brand, the type, blah blah.

headed to river island of course! but…

there wasn’t anything really exciting or worth buying.. and so, we decided.. why not try on clothes?

this was like 167 or something. i don’t remember the price cos it was too darn ex and i wouldn’t buy it anyway!

oh well, make up for it by taking photos. hahaha

but i spotted one that i really liked.. and it’s slashed to 55 bucks!!!

however, it was quite a dangerous piece.. because if i grew fat after eating, then my tummy would show la, since it’s spandex and all…

so anyway.. we didn’t buy anything from river island! and neither did we use up hl’s $20 voucher -_-”’

everywhere was so disappointing i guess…

we walked into forever21 (i don’t understand why would anyone buy anything from there anymore. the clothes aren’t even nice anymore! gone were the days we would deliberate over whether to buy the top or not.. and ironically the queue was soooooo long!), mango (okay, the coats were really nice, but hello! i’m no longer going paris so i should stop looking at coats), principles (okay, that grecian gown is so nice! but it’s wayyyy taller than me), pull and bear, la senza (too filled with their prostitute underwear.. i mean, because they’re like touched by everyone and it looks like it’s a pasar malam store la!), zara (too ex compared to the one in bellecour, very backdated fashion.. like whatever i see in lyon, i see it 2 years later over here.. and some clothes look like they’re more ancient than my grandma, for goodness sake!), bebe (who would pay $90 for a t shirt??? plus we couldn’t find the stuff that was on the display in the store…so it was kinda sad), aldo (because the shoes that i saw online cannot be found in singapore), etcetc.

okay, basically i guess you can tell that shopping was really really a disappointment.

thank goodness food wasn’t. we ate at thai express at like 4pm for lunch/dinner?? and then after shopping around for a while more, hl said she liked creme brulee so i brought her to the fre(n)sh cafe.. because their creme brulee is only 5.50 and it’s damn good! and.. look!

they even have an effiel tower, stenciled in cocoa powder on the plate!

i took a dessert of the day, which was chocolate mousse… and oh my, the taste was so rich it was worth every bit of my $5.50! hahah.
and look!

i had a stenciled cocoa powder of the name of the cafe too!

and their service was so good, even though we sat outside (cos usually for most places, when u sit outside, you tend to be ignored..), and water was served and all.. but there was no service charge! meaning the prices were nett prices!!

okay, very abrupt ending i guess. hahah. but dammit la, deardear is still not back…

but i found another piece that i like!

haha, maybe this is my way of making up because i am stuck in sunny singapore. (i wonder who came up with that term!)

….eurotrip, louis vuitton gifts for my mum and myself.. i was all geared up for pimkie and claire’s and all the interesting books at fnac and librarie privees (which means private bookshops, although i don’t see how bookshop translates to librarie and library translates to bibliotheque).. i wanted to travel to finland, see santa claus, spend a wonderful christmas in italy/greece, a wonderful spring in spain/portugal, and summer around europe/scandinavia..

but all these had to be crushed, thanks to the bloody inefficiency of the whole damn place.

dammit. i was even prepared for picnics during weekends, eating at patisseries along vieux lyon, munching down kebabs and crepes at hotel de ville, buying 2-euro books from bookstores in bellecour..

urgh.

and then we were given the choice of upmc.. wonderful location beside jardin des plantes, jardin de luxembourg, across the river from notre dame, across another river from gare de lyon, which would give us wonderful access to the tgv.. but damn! the deadline is like tomorrow noon time and i don’t even have the time to settle anything.

and then i thought i could go on a holiday with ann and bunch to penang.. seems like the plan’s not going into action somehow.. as they had already bought their tickets wayyyy before hand..

and i thought taiwan would be good.. but of course, as i had told deardear earlier that i was going to paris, he went ahead to book a malacca trip with his dance peeps instead. and…irhtdpbtw, ihtmamed, atmitof, tmia!

1. some people take lots of pills (which is stupid, because if you don’t die, your kidney would be severely damaged!)..

reason why i won’t do that: i’m damn scared of taking pills la! have you seen me taking pills? i need to gulp down so much water just for ONE pill. how to take more than one?

2. some people jump off the building.

reason why i won’t do that: i’m too scared to even go up to the building. i think my legs will turn into jelly just at the thought of taking the lift up, thanks to my wonderful height phobia.

3. some people slit their wrist.

reason why i won’t do that: i will be trembling like shit, and will probably faint even before i cut myself. because i can’t stand the excessive amount of blood.

so yeah.. everytime i write a comment like “i’m dying”, “just let me die”.. know that it’s just a passing comment ok? lol.

it’s because from monday to wednesday next week.. i have 3 core papers.

another one which is mcq & true/false (with negative marking. duh!).. which constitutes like technically 40% and it shouldn’t be that bad especially since i’ve covered some of the stuff with my another module (which i had exam today for).. but i have no idea why am i panicking too.

ok i’m not usually so vulgar in my blog but i’m seriously damn pissed.
i dunno to be pissed at sci dean’s office or at iro.. or BOTH.

1. iro told us we were bonded, so we need not apply to any other uni other than insa.
reality: we didn’t get to go.

never mind.

2. iro they said they understand our plight and our “bond”, so they are willing to let us choose any uni in france. (note, not ANY uni, as previously thought to be.wtf)
reality: we heard from sci dean’s office that if we don’t manage to find a uni to go to, we have to pay the forfeit of a few K. wtf i ask you? is it my choice? did i not want to go? u didn’t accept any life science people, what can we do? you ask me to pay, i’m going to write a petition with a rest of the other 10+ ppl man! wtf!

3. sci dean’s office told us we should not have contacted the PU directly, when they obviously told us the other day to find out if there are any spaces in the other unis, because it’s too damn late and most applications have closed. so what is it about being pissed off with us for contacting the PUs?

4. upmc is so willing to let us go, but sci dean’s office said that it’s a VERY BIG PROBLEM if they have to let extra 4 ppl from UPMC to come to life sci. hello can i ask you, what’s the cohort of life science? 600? 700? 800? i don’t know.. but surely FOUR don’t make too much of a difference. why don’t you just let four less C.A.T.s to come here instead. there were a whole bunch at the canteen today, and oh fuck, were they damn noisy and irritating!

5. they keep telling us to choose other unis for backup. i have checked like every fucking uni in france (those that are PUs of course, and i can’t get any other unis that have modules that we can take. and it’s total waste of my time since it’s the exam period). so why do you keep asking me to search other unis when obviously i have searched and told you repeatedly that it’s impossible?

6. so now even if we get our modules approved, sci dean’s office may not let us go! wtf! i pray hard that the associate dean to approve. i also hope that everyone who reads this can help me pray too. (ok kidding, just do so if you want to. lol)

couldn’t you just have liaised properly or told us to map to other unis, so that we don’t have to go through all these trouble, during our busy exam time?

i heard from uni of pierre and marie curie!! (UPMC).

gotta check with the admin if there are spaces. but that guy in charge is so nice! he told us to submit the list of modules we have taken, and the list of modules we want to take (provided we fulfilled the pre-requisties).. so i may be on my way to paris instead!

to nx: erm, i’m keeping my fingers crossed. i don’t really want to stay in ___ you know. it’s so shitty.

anyway i think upmc is really nice. cos..

1. they’re willing to help us settle everything quickly (ironically our OWN home uni’s IRO is taking 6218642368161836 years to call INSA)

2. they allow you to bring french/eng dictionaries in during CA and exams.. if your mother tongue isn’t french! just have to get a letter from the secretariat. which is fine by me :)

3.it’s like a medical/science uni.. unlike insa which is an engine uni and now i have so many more modules to choose from..
